Fiber College Class Offerings

(please note there will be a few more classes added as soon as we are able to confirm them with the instructors...we just didn't want to keep you waiting any longer...thanks for your patience)

Fiber College is dedicated to enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you're looking for an introductory class or wanting to perfect your technique, with over 40 classes, there's something at Fiber College for you. Most classes are 2 to 4 hours in length and cost $25 to $45 each. With bargains like these, why not take several and learn new skills for the long winter months ahead?

Class sizes are limited.

You are also welcome to attend the college, shop the boulevard and participate in the free demonstrations without taking a class.

Introduction to Tapestry Weaving    w/ Maria Kovacs         Class size: 12    Where: Garage A/B

Thursday:    9:00 AM    4:00 PM (1 hour for lunch)
    Description: This class will be an introduction to weaving a small tapestry. Tapestry is a specific way of weaving that is usually associated with pictorial wall hangings. We will weave on our own small frame loom- that will be provided. Learn all the basics of dressing the loom, creating a weaving design, weaving techniques, color and finishing techniques. This fun class will be an adventure in creativity. Let's start with a sample and work toward you own expression. It is a great way to try something different all you spinners, knitters and fiber workers. The looms are portable, you can use them anywhere, and also utilize your own yarn stash.

Materials fee: $25.00 -Stretcher strip loom assembled and marked, warping yarn and limited weaving yarn to try out.

Yarn Jazz - Creating Unique Yarns with Color Blending w/ Linda Whiting Class size: 12 Where: Arcade

Thursday: 9:00 AM 4:00 PM (1 hour for lunch)

Description: We can’t buy all the wonderful yarns available even though we might want to but we can make our own unique yarns by mixing colors and fibers on a drum carder. We’ll begin the adventure Using one base color in varying proportions with natural colored fibers to create yarns of subtlety and depth of shade and then move on to create yarns using several colors and techniques. As jazz can be cool and smooth or more syncopated and unrestrained, or improvisational so can we make our yarns. Blending colors side by side will allow color personalities to dance to their own rhythms while those same colors blended together will present a more mellow composition.

We’ll learn about proportion, accents, color properties, how to make combinations that “sing’ and why they do. Come prepared to make beautiful yarns that will rival what you see in the shops, to understand the differences between a painted yarn, a heather-blended yarn, yarn from painted roving and more. We will card and spin samples and we will analyze the results. How is the final yarn affected when it is spun, plied and knit? Each person will have a full set of samples to take home at the end of the day along with the class booklet. Expanding color choices is encouraged. Come on – jazz it up!

Photo Inspired landscape Quilts w/ Mary Ellen Krantz Class size: 12 Where: Rec Hall

Thursday: 9:00 AM 4:00 PM (1 hour for lunch)

Description: Learn how print a landscape photo onto fabric (choose one of my photographs for the class but the process will work for your own wonderful photos later on). Learn the role that scanners, digital cameras, photo software and printers play to get crisp, richly colored images on fabric. Use the latest products to make your fabric images soft, washable, and lightfast. Learn how to extend your quilt outward from your landscape photo using an easy, new technique. Blend your fabrics with your photo in such a way that viewers will just where your photo ends and the fabric begins. Students do not need to bring any computer equipment or sewing machine this class!

High thread count cotton fabric for printing, Bubble Jet Set, Fabric backing sheets, Printer inks, Digital images for students to choose from Informative handouts.

Students bring:
Roll of 18” wide* freezer paper (you’ll only need 2 30” cuts so sharing with a friend is an option), Scotch Tape, Number 2 pencil and good eraser, Medium point black marking pen, Paper scissors, Ruler, rotary cutter, mat (travel size), A personal iron and ironing surface

You will be blending your fabric with your choice of one of several landscape photographs supplied by the teacher.

Fabric: Approx. ¼ yard pieces of fabric that you can envision working in a landscape piece - e.g., bring lots of blues (sky or water) – hand dyes, semi-solids, batiks seem to work best, lots of greens (grass, leaves, bushes) , grays and whites (rocks or snow), tans and browns (sand, tree bark ) some purples (because we like them!) and a little red. So-called “landscape” fabrics not needed. You’ll need relatively small pieces of fabric and students often share/trade with each other to get the best blend.

* Note: If you have trouble finding 18inch wide freezer paper – get whatever size you can and we will work with that.

Description: Learn the technique of wet felt with a laminate base. Nuno felting for a soft drapy silk scarf with a touch of warm wool Transform a silk scarf into a silk and wool scarf in as little as two hours. Felting like you never have before.... instantly gratifying, beautiful and ready to wear that same day!

Class fee: $35.00

Materials fee: $20.00 -Includes silk scarf (laminate), merino wool, silk. Participants are encourage to bring an old silk scarf (one that has been hanging around for years or one that you never wear). We will transform the old into a new look, but it has to be 100% silk.

Student provides: One towel, notepad, 100% silk scarf or may be purchased from instructor.

Beginning Bobbin Lace w/ Gloria Buntrock Class size: 12 Where: Rec Hall A

Description: Learn a little about the history of bobbin lace, preparing and handling the bobbins, and making a bookmark using 12 bobbins and four beginning stitches.

Kumihimo Braiding w/ Linda Whiting Class size: 8 Where: Garage A

Description: Kumihimo, "coming together (kumi) of threads (himo)", is the ancient art of Japanese Braiding. These durable braids were used as ties and belts for clothing, and closures for Samurai armor. Traditionally they are woven on a stand called a marudai. The threads, wound on bobbins, are lifted in pairs and set down in opposing positions to create a variety of interesting patterned braids. We will be using a handheld braiding disk with plastic bobbins, a portable and inexpensive substitute, to create simple braids that can be made into necklaces, bracelets and for other decorative uses.

Description: Explore, create and have fun while designing 2 yards of fabric for your quilts, stash, clothing, etc. No experience, other than some free spirit is necessary for you to gain some ideas and techniques which may also be applied to other painting techniques.

Beginner’s Fly Tying w/ Harold (Harry) Michaud Class size: 10 Where: Rec. Hall B

Description: This class will include information for individuals to learn many of the aspects of fly tying. Everything from hook sizes, material selection, tying techniques to the whip finish. My goal is to have individuals be able to tie dry flies, streamers and tandem flies that are effective while wading small trout stream to trolling a large tandem fly behind a boat and motor. There is nothing more exciting than catching your first fish on a fly of your creation. Teaching you to tie a fly will be my responsibility -- bragging rights will be yours.

Charmed de Fleur Bracelet w/ Jeannette Cook Class size: 14 Where: Arcade

Description: What a charming little bracelet! Create a bouquet of tiny flower charms using fine French and hand dyed silk ribbons embellished with beads to add dimension, sparkle and glow. Suspend each flower charm from a wonderful beaded chain bracelet you construct with Delica beads. Make a toggle clasp and you have a delicate, colorful bracelet that you will be proud to wear.

Materials fee: $95.00 -Includes a kit containing several 6" pieces of hand dyed silk ribbon and French wire ribbon, Delica beads for the bracelet chain and lots of accent beads.2 beading needles and thread.

Weaving in Navajo Tradition w/ Alice Seeger Class size: 15 Where: Garage A

Description: Weaving has provided individual and cultural expression, as well as economic support for Navajo People for many generations. In this class participants will warp a small frame loom and learn weft-faced tapestry weaving. Traditional Navajo colors and designs will be explored.

Penny Rugs w/ Janet Conner Class size: 15 Where: Garage B

Description: Penny Rugs are made with appliquéd shapes of felted wool fabrics layered to create simple folk art patterns and designs. Each shape is embroidered in place using a blanket stitch around its borders. Penny Rugs are so named because one of the most common designs is small circles layered onto one another. Seldom actually used as rugs, these wool appliqués can be used as table mats or wall hangings. Small projects could include a scissors case or an eyeglass case, pincushion or little bag.

All About Angora w/ Liz Grover Class size: 12 Where: Rec Hall B

Description: Spinners will warm up by spinning sheep wool and then slowing blending in the Angora. By the end of the two hours, spinners will be able to spin the blends and make one skein of Angora Yarn. Discussions during spinning times will focus on Angora Care(nutrition, housing, wool block etc.) and harvesting the luxurious wool.

Materials fee: $8.00 -Includes the sheep & Angora wool and of course the bunnies!
Student provides: Wheels and carders or combs. Instructors will have extra carders and combs to try.

Spinner's Notebook for Wool w/ Deb Woolley Class size: 12 Where: Rec Hall B

Description: Ever wonder what it's like to spin Jacob, Corridale, Tunis, Romney, Navajo-Churro, Cotswold, Border Leicester, Rambouillet, Icelandic, Cormo, Merino, and many others?

Each participant will be able to spin a sample of each breed, then insert it into a "Spinners Notebook" to keep as a reference. The notebook will include information on each breed.

Recycled Rag Rugs w/ Laurie Sims Class size: 12 Where: Basketball Court

Description: Turn worn or torn flannel sheets into surprisingly strong and durable floor mats or chair pads. The prep is easy and fun. The crochet is simple and done with a really big hook.

Description: The quilting class to take before you take ANY quilting class! This class will save you decades of learning by trial and error! Selecting your fabric, your threads, your needles, your batting. Choosing the right notions the first time around. The right way to mark for piecing; for quilting. We'll touch on the stitches and knots you'll need to know. Taking care of your precious finished quilts, and a thousand tips and tricks! And stretch breaks to save your back and your wrists so you can go on quilting forever! This is the quilting class no-one teaches!

Native Plant Dyeing w/ Michelle DeLucia Class size: 20 Where: Basketball Court

Description: Learn the natural way to dye your favorite fiber fiber using flowers you grow and plants that are native to our landscape. During this workshop you will learn the basics of setting up a safe dyeing environment at home using a safe mordant. We will use our farms wool and everyone will bring home samples of natural dyed wool.

Materials fee: $15.00 -Includes plants for dyeing & homegrown sheep's wool. Natural dye books to purchase.

Beads from Paper w/ Delores Broberg Class size: 12 Where: Rec Hall B

Description: They can be rolled, woven or molded. Beads made from paper can be used to make jewelry or tree ornaments. When finished, they are fairly sturdy. This is a good way to use some of those papers you hate to toss because they are so beautiful - or you can make paper just for this process. Some finger dexterity and imagination, but little experience, is required.

Description: Weave a symbolic tapestry weaving on the portable Journey Loom, with simple finishing and embellishing. Create the twisted belt, and imbue your weaving, in a personal ceremony, with silent dreams. A beautiful, meaningful and powerful piece that can help you realize your vision.

Materials fee: $5.00 -Includes Journey looms on loan for the class (may be purchased after), warp, wool/mohair weft yarns.

Student provides: favorite beads, buttons, crystals, small stones, a wisp of yarn form your great grandmother's shawl, a tuft of hair from a canine member of your family to decorate and enrich the fringes of your weaving.

Mastering the Curl w/ Jeannette Cook Class size: 14 Where: Arcade

Description: This wonderful little pendant is easy and fun for all skill levels. It is Jeannette's Signature class! A variation on Peyote Stitch and up to 5 different sizes and shapes of beads are used to create the shape. This is an off loom beading technique using a needle and thread.

Materials fee: $42.00 -Includes Kits with an assortment of beads in several colorways will be available to choose from. Complete instructions 2 beading needles and Beading thread.

Drop Spindling w/ Deborah Bergman Class size: 15 Where: Garage A

Description: One of the earliest tools used for making yarn was the drop spindle. It is still one of the most portable and inexpensive methods to create your own wonderful yarn. Learn how to spin wool, make a 2-ply yarn, and skein your finished yarn. No previous experience is necessary.

Materials fee: $25.00 -Includes a hardwood top whorl drop spindle of the appropriate weight and prepared fleece. Written information will accompany individual instruction.

Student provides: Enthusiasm and the need to increase your yarn stash!

The Magic of Mohair w/ Pogo Class size: 10 Where: Basketball Court

Description: We'll start off by examining the unique qualities of mohair: strength, sheen and style in raw and processed fibers of different grades. Next is matching the fiber to the project from kid mohair shawls, multi-purpose knitting yarns, to old buck fleece rug yarns. Then it is off to our wheels and lots of sampling. We'll try 100% mohair roving, blending fibers including phying and marling, and finally some novelty yarns ususing core spinning and multiple plying. Participants should be proficient at spinning singles and plying on a wheel.

Materials fee: 25.00 -Includes all fiber- wool & mohair roving and fluff.

Student provides: wheel, at least 2 bobbins, 2 different colored spools of sewing thread, a margarine or cottage chees tub with lid, ball winder and niddy-noddy if you have them.

Fair Isle Knitting (two colored) Simplified w/ Chris Savoy Class size: 10 Where: Arcade

Description: Learn how to create your own fair Isle knites using an easy stranding techniqe that eleiminates long floats and uneven tension in your work.

Photograph Your Work w/ Mary Anne Mucklestone Class size: 12 Where: Rec Hall A

Description: Tips and techniques for getting the best digital image of your work. Styling,lighting choices and composing your shot will be covered. Tips on organizing your images will be included as well as touching on all kinds of great things the internet has to offer.

Student provides: Students should bring their digital cameras and some work they would like to photograph.Examples of previous photography is welcome for critique.

Super Easy Stretchy Bracelets w/ Laurie Farrell Class size: 12 Where: Garage A

Description: Bead up one, two or more colorful, handmade bead bracelets. Big palette of colors to play with in gorgeous Raku-fired beads. Satisfy yourself and learn how to make the easiest, happiest Christmas gifts ever!

Materials fee: $0.00 -Includes durable stretch beading cord - 1 packet of glass spacer beads - mat to work on.
Supplies/Kit Fee: 6 to 12 raku beads @ $1 to $2 each

Felted Paintings w/ Susan Perrine Class size: 12 Where: Basketball Court

Description: Create a colorful animal, landscape or abstract image using flat feltmaking techniques. Beads, findings, embroidery floss or sparkly threads may be used to embellish the image. Finish your pieces with backing fabric, stretch over form core and it will be ready to hang. (Beginner felter, some sewing skills helpful).

Folk Art Rug Hooking w/ Janet Conner Class size: 12 Where: Garage B

Description: Have you ever admired the simple and whimsical designs of hand hooked rugs? Genuine hooked rugs use wool fabric strips, not yarn, and are rich with texture and color. Like all old fashioned crafts, rug hooking is low-tech, simple and lots of fun! Your instructor, Janet Conner, is known as the "Happy Hooker" and she is an experienced teacher who LOVES working with beginners!
Learn the sequence and procedure of rug hooking, from start to finish. Every step will be demonstrated. You will choose a 12" hooked chairpad for your project, available directly from the instructor. We will briefly discuss the history and tradition of primitive rug hooking, learn about finding and preparing materials, and research sources for design inspiration. Your rug hooking kit will include everything needed: hook, instructions, design suggestions, binding, burlap, hoop and a selection of one-of-a-kind heirloom and hand dyed wools. If you have a favorite pair of sharp fabric scissors, you may bring these to class.
