Freeform Knitting & Crochet

Saturday:  9:00 A.M.- 1:00 P.M.        Instructor:   Terri Lipman     Class Size: 12
Description: Freeform Knitting and Crochet is the art of creating organic shapes by knitting and/or crochet various yarns. These shapes are then connected by knitting, crochet or sewing. These scrumbles, as they are known, are the result of any yarn, any kind or size of needle and any creative idea. The scrumbles are then connected to form a handbag, scarf, sweater, hat, anything that the imagination can create. One must know how to cast on, knit and purl in knitting and chain and sew a single crochet to participate in this class. All other techniques will be taught.
Bring your creativity and have fun for a day! Freeform crochet was first done by Walter and Sylvia Cosh in the 1970’s. Sunday: 9:00 A.M.- 12:00 P.M.     Instructor:  Linda Whiting      Class Size: 10
Description: Kumihimo, which means “the gathering of threads,” is the ancient art of Japanese Braiding. Generally made of silk these braids are widely used as functional or decorative elements of the kimono, the traditional Japanese dress, but can be used in many other ways. Traditionally these braids are woven on a “Maru dai”, a stand for weaving kumihimo. The threads, wound on wooden bobbins, are lifted in pairs and set down in opposing positions to create a variety of interesting patterned braids. We will be using a handheld braiding disk with plastic bobbins, a portable and inexpensive substitute. Students will learn to make round, square and flat braids and discover how to create amazing variations by changing braiding materials.
Class fee:  $35.00       Materials fee: $15.00  Includes braiding disk, bobbins, braiding threads, instruction sheets. Maru dai with bobbins and examples of woven braids. A variety of books to show.
Student provides: Scissors, pen or pencil for taking notes
